“It is important to express oneself…provided the feelings are real and are taken from you own experience.” Artist Berthe Morisot uttered these words. And these words were in physically form this past Thursday at the GirlSprit WomenSong Inc. Bring Me Your Daughter Exhibit 9th Annual Gathering of Girls Art show at the Neighborhood Holistic in Harlem. Curated my Khuumba Ama, the show featured art by Yumnah Najah of Yumnah Designs, Farah Qadar, and Khadijah Salaam of Djahs Dolls, women between the ages of 18-30. Attendees also got a chance to hear from 2009 Harriet’s Heart College Scholarship Awardee Junise Aranda. The evening was filled with warmth and joy as the artists got a chance to dialogue with attendees and sell some of their wonderful art. GSWS founder Pamela Salaam Jaha also gave soul-lifting comments as to the purpose of the show as well as the importance of loving one’s self.
