Last week, photos of Beyonce with dark paint on her face hit the internet to a flurry of responses and debates. The photo shoot, being done for a french magazine, is supposed to be a tribute to African Queens of the past. Even though there where pictures of Beyonce with beautiful crowns of fabric on her head like this:

they were overshadowed by the “black-face” images. I believe that this photo shoot could have been done with her natural skin tone. African women come in all shapes and sizes. Using a symbol which brings to mind decades of false-advertising of african american as well as racial stereotypes is sort of tasteless. Even though designers constantly want to “push the envelope” they need to be careful not to completely rip it open and destroy it. Below is a behind-the-shoot video.
